On the University Health Plans home page, click on the link to "Waive out of the Salem State University Health Plan" or "Enroll online in the Salem State University Health Plan."
International students with comparable health insurance coverage may waive SSU's Blue Cross Blue Shield Insurance plan. Upon submission of the waiver form, your waiver will be reviewed, and you will receive follow-up from info@univhealthplans.com within 3-4 business days confirming if it is approved, denied or if additional information is needed.

You may submit a copy of your insurance card during the waiver process, but it is not required.
If you choose to waive out, you must enter your insurance information for proof of insurance.
DEADLINES (enroll in or waive out of Health Insurance)
- Fall 2024: September 27
- Spring 2025: January 31
IMPORTANT: To comply with state law, all newly admitted students or students who are registered for at least 75 percent of a full course load for the Annual 2024-2025 plan MUST go online to either waive out of or enroll in the Annual insurance plan no later than the deadline date of September 27, 2024. The deadline date to waive out of or enroll in the spring insurance plan is January 31, 2025.
Information on how to waive out of the Salem State University Student Health Plan. A step-by-step version is also available. To waive out of the Salem State Student Health Plan, you will be asked to provide information on your insurance coverage.
To be eligible to waive out of the plan, you must be currently enrolled in a health insurance plan with comparable coverage either as a dependent (on parent’s or spouse’s plan), or through a plan you have at your place of employment or have purchased yourself.
Please note: MassHealth Limited, Health Safety Net, and Children’s Medical Security Plan are not acceptable plans. Once information is provided, a credit will be reflected on your account within three to four business days as waiver health insurance -$3,941 for the fall term and waiver health insurance -$2,301 for the spring term. The deadline for waiving out of the student accident and sickness insurance plan is September 27, 2024, for fall and spring is January 31,2025.
MESSAGE FOR STUDENTS WITH MASSHEALTH: If you are covered by MassHealth (other than MassHealth Limited, Health Safety Net, or Children's Medical Security Plan), you are eligible to waive the student health insurance plan.
If you previously participated in the MassHealth Premium Assistance Program, the program is no longer available and the 2019 – 2020 BCBS plan ends 7/31/2020. MassHealth is not able to purchase the 2020-2021 student health insurance plan for you. Students with active MassHealth benefits will need to choose an ACO, MCO, or PCC Plan to manage their MassHealth benefits. Additional information can be viewed HERE.
Information on how to enroll online in the Salem State University Student Health Plan: To enroll online in the Salem State Student Health Plan, you must confirm your acceptance of the plan. You will be assigned a Member ID number and your name will be submitted to Blue Cross Blue Shield to be added to the doctor and pharmacy databases. An insurance card will be mailed to you within 10-11 business days. The deadline for enrolling in the annual student accident and sickness insurance plan is September 27, 2024, and for the spring term insurance plan, the waiver deadline January 31,2025.
Massachusetts law regarding Student Health Insurance
Massachusetts state law requires that all students enrolled in at least 75 percent of their program's full-time course load at an institution of higher learning in Massachusetts must participate in a Student Health Insurance Program (SHIP) or in a health insurance plan with comparable coverage.
Massachusetts colleges and universities are required to sponsor a health plan for students who do not have health insurance. A charge is added to a student's account in the fall term based on the criteria mentioned above. The Salem State University Student Health Plan is provided by Blue Cross Blue Shield and administered by University Health Plans. The premium for the Annual 2024-2025 plan is $3,941 and the policy is in effect from August 1, 2024, through July 31, 2025.
If you are a new or returning student who did not meet the insurance criteria in the fall term but have enrolled in at least 75 percent of your program's full-time course load for the spring term, you will be charged $2,301. The policy is in effect from January 1, 2025, through July 31, 2025.
