Massachusetts law regarding Student Health Insurance

Massachusetts state law requires that all students enrolled in at least 75 percent of their program's full-time course load at an institution of higher learning in Massachusetts must participate in a Student Health Insurance Program (SHIP) or in a health insurance plan with comparable coverage.

Massachusetts colleges and universities are required to sponsor a health plan for students who do not have health insurance. A charge is added to a student's account in the fall term based on the criteria mentioned above. The Salem State University Student Health Plan is provided by Blue Cross Blue Shield and administered by University Health Plans. The premium for the Annual 2023-2024 plan is $3,779 and the policy is in effect from August 1, 2023, through July 31, 2024.

If you are a new or returning student who did not meet the insurance criteria in the fall term but have enrolled in at least 75 percent of your program's full-time course load for the spring term, you will be charged $TBA. The policy is in effect from January 1, 2024, through July 31, 2024.
