RISE Program

What is the RISE program?

The RISE (Resources and Inspiration for Student Empowerment) program connects first-generation students with a success coach to provide support in navigating both the academic and social life at Salem State University. Students may have either first-year or sophomore status (transfer students are invited as well) to participate.

Students are matched with a staff member in the First-Generation Student Success Center who will meet with them every other week to check-in, discuss any concerns, provide motivation and encouragement and assist students in navigating the various processes at the university.

How do I join?

Eligible sophomore students are invited to participate in the program via email in April.  There are limited spots available so interested students should sign up as soon as possible.

Eligible first-year students are invited to participate in the program via email. Invitations are sent out in June outlining the program and sign-up process.  Students are not part of the program until they have completed the sign-up form. PLEASE NOTE: family members should not sign their students up. Spaces are limited, so involvement will be on a first-come basis and focused on students who are committed to participating. Students who have been invited may sign up at the link sent to them via email on a specific date as indicated in the summer planning calendar new students receive (students should always double-check their clutter/junk folders in case emails accidentally go there). If students lost the information, they may email firstgen@salemstate.edu.

What do I get out of the program?

Besides the support of a designated success coach to meet with every other week, students are invited to special social and support programs, receive a free t-shirt, and, when the FYE office is open, have access to free printing for class-related needs. In addition, other leadership and engagement opportunities are available to students who participate.

Additional questions about the program can be directed to the first-year experience office at 978.542.2618 or firstgen@salemstate.edu.
