Support for Sophomores on Academic Warning
Salem State University believes in your ability to achieve your college and career goals. As you begin thinking about next year, there are several support structures in place to help you.
Academic Advising
Academic Advising is committed to meeting with all sophomores who received an Academic Warning after spring 2025. Professional advisors are here to support you, so you can reset, refocus, and reconnect with your academic goals. Our mission is to provide you with information and resources to help get you back on track academically and return to Good Academic standing.
We know:
Life happens. Having a tough semester does not define who you are as a person or even as a student. You may have had difficulty balancing work, school, and family obligations, or health challenges, or had to be a caregiver. No matter what, you are capable and can turn this around.
We are here:
This summer you are strongly encouraged to meet with a professional advisor – please check your email for a forthcoming invitation to schedule an appointment via N360.
During this appointment we will:
- Review academic standing (warning) policy
- Impacts of academic warning – what comes next?
- Discuss and identify challenges and successes
- Execute a plan for success
- Adjust class schedule
- Repeating a course
- Identify resources and make referrals
- Connect you with your assigned success coach who will provide you ongoing support throughout the next two semesters
Coaching Program
We all need someone who supports us during challenging times and cheers us on when we need some motivation. The second year of college can be intimidating, and that’s why our new coaching program for second year/sophomores has been developed.
Students who find themselves on academic warning moving into the fall semester are connected with a success coach through the Office of Student Success and the First Year Experience. Your coach will meet with you on a bi-weekly basis throughout the fall (and if interested, spring) semester. During this time, they will assist you in
- identifying challenges and brainstorming solutions.
- demystifying university processes and procedures.
- connecting with specific campus resources as needs arise.
- building skills and strategies to support your success both in and out of the classroom.
- celebrating every moment that you achieve a new level of success.
You will receive information about who your success coach is, how to contact them, and how to set up your regularly scheduled meeting in mid-late August (or early January for students assigned a coach at the start of the spring semester.)
