3. On the Section Tagging Entry screen:

  • Enter Spring 2026 in the term box under your name.
  • Use the dropdown next to each course to select Civic Learning.

Why Tag Your Course?

  • Helps students find and register for courses with civic learning content.
  • Allows the university to track civic learning and civic engagement participation.

Civic Learning Definition

At Salem State we adapt the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education’s (BHE) definition of civic learning, defining civic learning and civic engagement as:

Leveraging and building on the knowledge and experience of students, faculty, and staff to equitably collaborate with community partners, address the pressing public issues and align curriculum, scholarship, research, and creative activities with the public good.

What Counts as Civic Learning?

Use the tag if your course includes one or both of the following:

1. Public Engagement Knowledge and Skills

  • Builds skills for advocacy, activism, or collective action.
  • Covers political issues, institutions, or public policy.

2. Public Engagement Application and Action Orientation

  • Examines social inequalities with the goal of promoting meaningful social change.

The deadline to tag your Spring 2026 course is October 8, 2025.
