What is the difference between a substitution and a waiver?

Frequently Asked Question

What is the difference between a substitution and a waiver?

Answer

A substitution is an academic action that allows a student to take one course in place of another course to satisfy a specific requirement. A waiver is an academic action that allows a student to not have to take a specific course at all. Substitutions and waivers do not carry credit or decrease the number of credits required for graduation. Only department chairpersons have the authority to approve substitutions and waivers.  Please note that substitutions will not override course prerequisites.
