What does academic warning mean?

What Is An Academic Warning?

Academic Warning is an academic standing assignment placed on some student records at the end of each term.

This standing is assigned in cases:

  1. A student had no prior academic standing assigned.
  2. A student was previously in good academic standing but is now below the GPA or academic progress/pace (credits attempted versus credits earned) requirements to maintain good standing for the semester.

Many students have had an academic warning assigned and have been able to move forward successfully with a little help.

A first-year student at Salem State who receives an Academic Warning in their first fall semester will need to register for and attend the FYE Student Success Summit.

What To Do If You Receive an Academic Warning?

  • Review your academic record, including both your GPA and academic progress/pace rate.
    • If you need to withdraw from a course or have failed one, consider adding that course to your schedule for the next semester or taking a Summer class to catch up.
  • Explore support services like the Math Learning Center, the Mary G. Walsh Writing Center, peer tutoring, or Counseling and Health Services for help with your classes.
  • Review the Student Success site in Canvas. The site offers a wide range of resources to support student success, including links to articles, past workshops, and upcoming workshops on study skills, time management, adjusting to online classes, and more.
