Learning modality describes how (delivery mode) and when (convening method) your class will meet. The delivery mode will tell you whether the class will meet only online, in-person, or a mix of both. The convening method will tell you whether the course will be meeting at specific times and locations, whether online or in-person. You will find these modalities associated with classes in class search and in the master schedule of classes. The default modality for classes is in-person, unless you see a class attribute in the class details that tells you the course has online components.
LEARNING MODALITY |
DELIVERY MODE How will the class meet? |
CONVENING METHOD When will the class meet? |
---|---|---|
Face-to-FaceAll instruction occurs in a designated campus location (classroom) during regularly scheduled predetermined days and times (synchronous) for which instructor and students are physically present throughout; will require detailed health and safety protocols for engagement among faculty and students. |
In-PersonAll instruction occurs in a designated campus location (classroom) during regularly scheduled predetermined days and times (synchronous) for which instructor and students are physically present throughout; will require detailed health and safety protocols for engagement among faculty and students. Canvas may be used for submitting assignments, completing homework or distributing class materials.
|
SynchronousYou’ll physically be in a classroom with your professor and classmates during pre-determined date and times. This modality resembles a traditional class and requires you to be in the classroom.
|
Hybrid Asynchronous (HYB)Student learning occurs both in scheduled in-person class meetings during specific published times and locations, and in asynchronous online class interactions. Typically, hybrid asynchronous classes will meet for fewer hours in person than standard in person classes, with more out of class work required.

Hybrid Synchronous (HYBS)Student learning occurs both in scheduled in-person class meetings during specific published times and locations, and in synchronous online class meetings during specific published times. Typically, hybrid synchronous classes will meet for fewer hours in person than standard in person classes, but will have required online class meetings.

Online AsynchronousStudent learning occurs exclusively online, asynchronously; no convenings of the entire class; student engagement with the faculty member occurs as requested via a digital platform. There will be no prescheduled meeting times either online or in-person. |
Online Only
You do not need to physically be on campus to complete this course. |
AsynchronousNo scheduled day or time to regularly meet as a class with your professor and classmates. You will most likely work independently. You are still responsible for submitting work by deadlines and due dates set by your professor. |
Online Blended (BL)Student learning occurs online, asynchronously, but with prescheduled synchronous in-virtual convenings of the entire class (e.g., Zoom). |

Online Synchronous (SO)Student learning occurs exclusively online, during regularly scheduled predetermined days and times, for which instructor and students are virtually present throughout (e.g., Zoom). |
Online Only
|
SynchronousYou will regularly meet online as an entire class on scheduled dates and times. |
Hy-Flex (HYFLEX)Classes listed as Hy-Flex will have students attending both online and in person, using technology that allows all participants to interact, regardless of physical location. |
Mix of In-Person and OnlineYou will either be attending classes in person at a scheduled time and location on campus, or attending classes at a scheduled time via videoconference (e.g., zoom) Students registering for Hy-Flex sections should not assume they will be attending solely online. In-person attendance may be required. |
