What is Phi Kappa Phi?

Phi Kappa Phi

Phi Kappa Phi is the nation’s oldest, most selective, and most prestigious all-discipline honor society. To date, almost 1800 people have been elected to the Salem State University chapter.

The national chapter of Phi Kappa Phi sponsors a number of fellowship and grant programs, including fifty-four Fellowships of $8,500 each, six of $20,000 each, and two of $35,000 each, to members entering the first year of graduate or professional study. Phi Kappa Phi Fellows go on to study at some of the nation’s top graduate schools.

How do I join Phi Kappa Phi?
In order to be inducted into the honor society, students must be invited by their school’s chapter. The criteria for eligibility are as follows:

  • Juniors must have completed at least 72 credit hours, with at least 24 semester hours at their current institution, and rank in the top 7.5 percent of their class.
  • Seniors must have completed at least 90 credit hours, with at least 24 semester hours at their current institution, and rank in the top 10 percent of their class.
  • Graduate students must have completed at least 18 graduate hours or the equivalent at their institution and rank in the top 10 percent of their class.

Faculty, professional staff, and alumni who achieve scholarly distinction may also be nominated to join by the membership of Phi Kappa Phi.

When do inductions occur?
An induction ceremony for those who accept the invitation to join is held at the end of the spring semester, and inductees’ family members are invited to attend.  Details of the ceremony are sent to members via standard mail and email.

If I am a member of Phi Kappa Phi, how do I apply for fellowships and grants?
Emerging Scholar Awards and Study Abroad grants are available to any qualifying student from Salem State, while the Phi Kappa Phi Fellowship program, Lover of Learning Grants and Literacy Grants are only available to active members of the chapter. Each active Phi Kappa Phi chapter may select one candidate from among its local applicants to compete for the Society-wide awards. For more information on these awards, visit the national website at http://PhiKappaPhi.org.
