Frequently Asked Question

What should I do if my laptop is stolen?

If your laptop has been stolen contact the local police and file a report immediately.  Time is of the essence, recovery may very likely not be guaranteed by Absolute/Computrace if a theft is not reported to authorities within two (2) weeks.

If the theft occurred on the Salem State University campus, file a report with campus police.

If the theft occurred off campus, file a report with the local police department.

Be sure to get a copy of the police report and the police report case number.

Once this has been done contact Absolute/Computrace at 1-877-337-0337 to report the theft to the recovery team.

The recommended Dell laptops come with Computrace pre-installed. Computrace is an anti-theft tracking software that tracks the stolen laptop and provides authorities with the information needed to get it back.  Most recovery claims are concluded within 60 days and often result in successful recovery. In the event that a laptop cannot be recovered within 60 days, Absolute LoJack will help to pay for a replacement.

For theft or loss of an Apple computer it may be possible to use Find My Mac to locate your computer.  The Apple support page provides a lot of helpful information.

Laptop theft can usually be prevented but unfortunately can still happen.  There are many ways a computer owner can protect a laptop and prevent loss or deter theft.  One of the most common suggestions, aside from just keeping the device out-of-sight, is to purchase a security cable to secure the laptop to a table or desk.  Another suggestion is to record the serial number or the service tag number from the device, and if possible the MAC address identification.
