What is Sophomore Service Saturday?
The Sophomore Service Saturday is an opportunity for 100 sophomores (residential, commuter, and transfers) to spend the day engaging in one of several service projects that gives back to the North Shore community.
What does the schedule of the day look like?
On Saturday, September 18th, all students engage in a service project that would be giving back to a community partners in the North Shore area.
Is lunch provided and what meal options are there for lunch?
Yes, lunch is provided! If you have dietary or allergy restrictions you will be able to indicate that on the registration form.
What attire should I wear for the day?
Participants receive a Day of Service t-shirt to wear on Saturday while volunteering. It is recommended that students dress for the weather (as it could be very hot or it could rain) and in something that you can move around in easily and don’t mind getting dirty. Many of the sites require CLOSED TOES SHOES (i.e. sneakers) instead of flip-flops or sandals. We also recommend you bring a water bottle with you especially if it’s hot out!
Will I be able to interact with upperclass students?
Yes! Each volunteer groups will be led by a one or two upperclass student volunteers known as the O-Team. These students work for the First Year Experience Office. First years will be able to talk with their O-team member(s), get to know the campus life, and ask any questions about the community partners you have!
What type of community partners are we able to serve?
Though this is the first-ever Sophomore Service Saturday, students in the past have worked with the Girls Inc., NAGLY, Lifebridge Homeless Shelter, New England Animal Shelter, Family Promise North Shore, various public schools, the Boys and Girls Clubs.

Can I put this on my resume?
Yes! Many employers look for volunteer work on resumes that come in for jobs. It demonstrates your willingness to engage in hard work and be passionate about issues outside of your normal class load. Some of our volunteers have also landed internships and part-time jobs after they completed the Sophomore Service Saturday!
Are there opportunities to hear more about First Year Day of Service and ask questions?
Absolutely! The First Year Experience office and Center for Civic Engagement host virtual information sessions throughout the month of June. The 2021-2022 interest sessions are schedule for the following dates and times:
June 1 from 1-2 pm
June 10 from 4:30-5:30 pm
June 19 from 12-1 pm
June 21 from 6-7 pm
