Student Access Guide

Salem State University uses several systems you will need to access during your time as a student here.

You can access all of these systems by logging on to the Salem State Website.

 You will need your Salem State ID to begin this process. Please use our SSU ID Lookup Tool if you have forgotten your ID.



STUDENT ID LOOKUP



To log in to the Salem State website, follow these steps:

  1. Browse to the Salem State website.
  2. From the homepage, select “Sign In" in the upper right-hand corner.
  3. Enter your Salem State University username in an email format (S0123456@salemstate.edu)

    (If you've forgotten your Salem State ID, use our Student ID Lookup Tool)
  4. On the next screen, enter your Salem State University password.
    1. If it is your first time logging in, you will be prompted to set up an authentication phone number.
    2. Enter the code sent to the phone number you provided.

Once logged in, you should see a black menu bar at the top of the website with links to:

  1. Navigator - the student information system for all your official university business.
  2. Canvas (eLearning) - our online course and learning management system.
  3. Email - Microsoft Outlook.
  4. Ask the Viking - search across Salem State websites to find answers to your questions.
  5. Course Catalog - online course catalog.
  6. Navigate - (different from Navigator!) this is our student success portal.

Instructions on this page also include Zoom which is not found on the black bar.

Navigator

Navigator is our student information system where you will manage all your official student business.

To log in to Navigator, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to the Salem State website.
  2. Select “Navigator” from the black bar at the top of the page.
  3. Select “Sign In” from the menu.
  4. Enter your Salem State ID number (S0123456) and password.
  5. This will take you to your Student Homepage where you will see a selection of tiles to choose from.

Canvas

Canvas is the university’s online learning management system. Professors will use Canvas in a variety of ways. Canvas allows students to track and submit assignments, connect with peers in discussion groups, and access files uploaded by their professor. Canvas is also where students will complete the New Student Orientation.

To access Canvas, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to the Salem State website.
  2. Select “Canvas” from the black bar at the top of the screen.
  3. If successful, you will be brought to your Canvas dashboard.

Email

Microsoft Outlook (campus email account)

Your Salem State University email address (@salemstate.edu) is where you will receive all official university communication so you should check this inbox often. The university will not send messages to your personal email address as we get closer to the start of the academic year. It is a good idea to use this account for anything related to Salem State so that it is all in one place.

To access your email, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to the Salem State website.
  2. Select “Email” from the black bar at the top of the screen.
  3. If successful, you will be brought to your Outlook inbox.

Navigate

Navigate (not to be confused with Navigator!) is a student advisor app that gets you from orientation to graduation. Navigate helps you stay on top of important dates and deadlines, explore your major, and quickly connect you to the people and resources you need.

To access Navigate on your computer, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to the Salem State website.
  2. Select “Navigate” from the black bar at the top of the screen.
  3. On the Navigate Login page, select "Login with your school account"
  4. If successful, you will be brought to your Navigate Student Dashboard.

To access Navigate on your mobile device:

  • download the Navigate Student mobile app for free in the Apple or Google Play store

ZOOM

Zoom is the university's platform for virtual learning and video conferencing.

To access Zoom, follow these steps:

  1. Browse to the Salem State Zoom sign-in page.
  2. Select "Sign In"
  3. Enter your Salem State username and password when prompted.
  4. If successful, you will be brought to your Zoom profile page.
