How Does Academic Probation Affect My Financial Aid?

Academic Probation may impact a student's eligibility to receive financial aid. Salem State University evaluates all students for academic performance and progress, regardless of whether they receive financial aid. This evaluation is called Academic Standing and is a policy overseen by the Registrar's Office.

The Financial Aid Office is required to evaluate all financial aid recipients' Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP). The SAP process is run independently from the Academic Standing process. While both policies are similar in their requirements, each process is executed separately.

Differences in either policy make it possible for a student to be on Academic Probation but have a positive SAP status and vice versa (positive Academic Standing with negative SAP status)

Both policies are equal in weight and validity, and neither supersedes the other. For an overview of both policies, please see the University Academic Standing and Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress Chart
