Use the new My Account Portal to manage all things related to your Salem State account! This includes self-service features like resetting your password, creating a password for the first time and making your account more secure by registering for multi-factor authentication (MFA). The portal also allows you to manage your devices, view your software licenses, download and install applications and much more!
Salem State is in the process of enabling "multi-factor authentication" for all Salem State accounts. This is probably the same thing you are experiencing on other websites because of new security requirements. You can enable this yourself now. If you are in the pilot group, see Multi-Factor Authentication Pilot, below.
Reset or Create your Salem State Account Password
You need to know your username to reset your password. A student username is your Salem State Student ID entered in an email format, like S012345@salemstate.edu, when logging into most Salem State resources. There are some exceptions. Notably, the Navigator Student Information System and the Polaris staff portal use unqualified usernames that don't have the "@salemstate.edu" added to the end. For staff and student employees, see More about Usernames, below.
If you are a a student, you can look up your username at navigator.salemstate.edu. Select "Account Help" and you will see a "Student ID Lookup" section.
At My Account Portal, select “Can’t access your account?” And then select “Next”.
Enter your username in the field labeled "Email or Username", enter the characters shown on the screen, then select “Next".
If you do not know your password, select "I forgot my password", then select "Next".
To receive a verification code to your alternate email address, select “email my alternate email”, and then select “email”.
Students' alternate email addresses (which would not be @salemstate.edu but likely something like @gmail.com) are pre-loaded from the address provided on the application. If you don't see that address or need to change it, send a message to the IT Help Desk. This applies to staff, too. ITS will expedite these requests. Once the alternate address has been updated, please resume with the next step.
Access your alternate email to receive the code, type the verification code from the email into the box, and then select “Next".
Type and confirm your new password, paying careful attention to the Salem State password requirements.
More about Usernames
Usernames at Salem State take these forms:
- Student: S1234567@salemstate.edu
- Faculty or staff: firstname.lastname@example.org
- Student employee: email@example.com
- Contractor: firstname.lastname@example.org
For staff, you got your username from Equal Opportunity and Human Resources and it's the same as your email address, like email@example.com. And a student-employee username is in the form firstname.lastname@example.org. That comes from Student Employment. You need this to access employee resources, like the Polaris staff portal, which you can't do with a student account.
If there are any problems with non-student accounts, talk to your supervisor, who should contact Equal Opportunity and Human Resources or the Student Employment Office.
Multi-Factor Authentication Pilot
As noted above, Salem State must enable multi-factor authentication for all accounts. We are starting with accounts for administrative staff with access to sensitive data. If you are in this group, you can change how you want this to work at the same My Account Portal link noted above.
Basically, you can choose which other "factors," in addition to your password, you want to use to sign in to Salem State resources. This includes the Microsoft Authenticator App for your phone, text message, or email to an alternative email address.
We very much want your feedback on how this is working for you. You can submit this at Multi Factor Authentication Pilot Feedback.
